A Historical Moment HCMS 8th Grade Social Science Fair Participants Win Again!By Roshiba McCrary
It was like a scene from a movie. Everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. The only missing element from this scene was the gaudy background music you hear as the movie climaxes.
This was not a Hollywood production but it was competition day at the State Social Science Fair. As previously reported, 8th grade students Terrell Davis and Michael Woods swept the Northeast Regional competition earning “Best in Region”.
These students outscored over 40 competing counties to garner top honors in the Class II division of the Social Science Fair. Preparation was soon underway for the impending state competition held in March. Michael and Terrell traveled to Dutchtown High School in Hampton, Georgia to make evident their impressive oracle skills as well as their wealth of knowledge within the Social Science discipline.
State judges were quite intrigued by these scholars’ project. They spent well over 15 minutes analyzing the project and its content and motioning for other judges to come and view the project. Terrell and Michael earned 1st place in their chosen discipline (History) for the Class II division.
This was and continues to be a historical moment for not only Hancock Central Middle School but for the Hancock County School System. Many Social Science projects have earned regional honors but none have earned state recognition. Trailblazers Terrell Davis and Michael Woods have raised the bar to new heights for the Social Studies Department.
The challenge was issued, accepted, and accomplished. Congratulations to these dynamic middle school scholars as well as their parents Mr. and Mrs. Cager Davis and Mr. and Mrs. Michael Woods. They all have earned every bit of praise.
Hometown recognition came from the Hancock County Board of Education at a board meeting held in April. Directing teacher was Roshiba McCrary, 8th Grade Social Studies teacher. She simply stated Terrell and Michael’s accomplishment was well deserved. Project is on display at the Hancock County Board of Education office.

Soccer Team Makes Their Debut for Lewis Elementary School
M.E. Lewis, Sr. Elementary School made history as the 21st Century Soccer team made their debut in Milledgeville on May 5, 2009. The M.E. Lewis Bullpups took the field and scored the first goal of the game. Forward Adrian Jones attacked the infield and sent a rocket through the goalkeeper for the second goal of the game. Fullback Maegan Leslie created all sorts of chaos for the Milledgeville team as she deflected all attempts to score in her area. However, the rivals gathered themselves to outscore the Bullpups by 2 points. Forward Dominic Franklin scored the second goal for the Bullpups. Johnasje Birston, Keovonte Lowe, Darien Warthen, Pierre Walker, and Yasmine Culver exhibited fancy footwork. Goalkeeper Ravenel Hill defended our goal quite well. However, the rival team scored three consecutive goals thus downing the Bullpups, 4-2. On May 7th, the Bullpups met a more experienced team and came up short, 0-5. The Bullpups traveled again to Milledgeville and came up short 0-8. Forwards Jasmine Culver, Keovonte Lowe, Deandre Dixon shots made unsuccessful attempts at scoring for the Bullpups. Excellent defense by Adrian Jones, KiAmber Jordan, Maegan Leslie, and Pierre Walker. The Bullpups have developed mentally, physically and socially through the game of soccer.
