Hancock County Schools Continue to Reduce Deficit

Despite the ups and downs of the stock market and the continuing financial woes of many businesses, the Hancock County School District persists in making great strides towards reducing the system’s deficit.
According to Hancock County School District’s Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Alma Harper, the system’s deficit issue is being tackled through a series of calculated cost cutting measures designed to save the system money. Among the cost cutting measures employed have been reductions to costs in the athletic department and a change in the system’s legal representation.
By changing its legal representation, the district has lowered its legal costs over a six-month time period by approximately $36,733.42. The cost of the former attorney’s fees from January to July totaled $60,473.28; the present attorney’s fees over that same time period are $23, 739.86. In past years the athletic support budget totaled $119, 610.00. The present budget totals $91, 943.00, producing a net savings of $27, 667.00.
Superintendent Reeves is pleased with the reduction in costs, “Reducing these costs allows us to worry less about our financial picture and put our focus on those matters of student success and achievement.”
